Self-Care – The most important thing for moms

I really need to do more for myself. Does this resonate with you? Self-care is way too important to push to the side.

I’m sure you spend a lot of time taking care of others. Nee, all of your time taking care of others.

Whether that be through laundry, cooking, cleaning, carpool or kissing boo boo’s better. It’s a full-time job and I hear your cries, or are those mine? Either way, mom life summed up is 95% about others and probably 5% about yourself.

Okay so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but that’s how it can feel.

Self Care for Moms

I’m sure you’ve heard it enough, take time for yourself. Well, I’m here to bash it into your mind hole again. You can’t take care of others if you feel like shit. Or get burned out, and that’s never fun. If you’re anything like me, it’s easy to go a long period of time just bottling your own needs away. And then once some kind soul has given you the opportunity to human on your own you don’t know what the hell to do.

Mom guilt plays a huge part in that. Especially if your baby daddy works and you’re at home with the little(s) you may feel like you’re just adding more work on to him. But seriously, you gotta take some time for you. The little things can make the biggest difference and can really turn your mood around. Even taking an extra long shower can do wonders for your head, and hair that you’ve been neglecting.

There are so many easy ways to just take a bit of time to pamper yourself. Yes, I know, maybe I should be doing some of those rather than rambling on here, but this, writing, is something that is on my list.

Relaxing, or self-care for everyone is different. Some people want to be out and socializing, some just want to get out of their house, some just want to do absolutely nothing, and others may want others to do things for them. It’s kind of like love languages, but for yourself.

Write it down…

While I can offer advice on self-care, I think it’s important for you to sit down, on your own and make a list. Yep, a list, because they’re fun and because it can be therapeutic. On that list, I want you to write down things that make you happy, things that are relaxing to you, things you’ve been craving and things you’ve been meaning to do. You can check out my quick list below for an example.

By the way, sorry for the shitty quality, I took these pictures in a pinch. But that’s just real life right, can’t always be perfect!

Your list doesn’t need to be fancy or be in a special notebook, just grab some paper, a napkin, or maybe your phone and let the juices flow.

After you’ve made that list, it’s time for another list. Sorry for putting you to work, but I promise it will be worth it. Look at the list you had just written about yourself. Now, on your new list, start writing down how you would accomplish things from your other list. Yes I know, something like eating ice cream is already pretty much spelled out for you. What I mean is, elaborate. For instance, if you wrote alone time, what is that alone time to you? In a coffee shop, at a library, driving, walking, sitting on the couch, laying in bed, yoga, meditating? Do this for as many of your listed items as you can. I’ve left my example below.

There is no wrong way to do this. I personally have a bullet journal. It’s not fancy like some of the ones you see on Instagram or Pinterest but it’s mine, and like me, it’s a work in progress. I choose to put my lists in there so they are pages opposite each other and I won’t lose them. Plus, did you know that when you write your goals down you have a better chance of manifesting them? Put that shit in the universe and let it happen.

If on your phone is your preference, there are so many different apps for making lists. Seriously, in your app store or whatever you have, just look up lists, you’ll find a ton. They can help you break things down into priority, category, color, whatever.

Another way to do it, brain dumping! If you don’t know what that is, check out this post where I talk all about how it helps me out.

Make it happen…

Just take some damn time for yourself. That’s the main theme here. Do something for you. It doesn’t need to be a whole, expensive day at the spa. As nice as that may be, and if that’s on your list then cool! But I think you get my drift.

Dance like nobody is watching

For example, when was the last time you just threw on some music and danced Cameron Diaz style from Charlies Angels. Really think about it. It’s probably been a hot minute, hasn’t it? Something as simple as cranking some tunes from your youth, however fleeting it may have been, can be so fun and so rewarding to yourself.

Maybe, you’ve been wanting to try yoga, but are nervous about being not as bendy as those Instagram chicks and are nervous to attend a class. I hear you, I’m with you. But that’s where I found They have super short classes (under 10mins) and classes well over an hour. Hundreds if not thousands of free videos. Yes, free. So that’s another option. If you want to know more about them you can check out either of the posts below. Or visit their website.

My biggest piece of advice, to both you and myself, is, make your time about you. Don’t say you’re going to go shopping and then end up getting groceries for the family and clothes for your little ones. I know you do it because I do it too. Make it a mandatory date with yourself.

With that, I’m out. Off to check off face mask on my list because the baby is down for a nap so it’s time!
