I’ve seen an ever-popular recipe for 2-ingredient DIY homemade playdough floating around Pinterest for awhile now. A few days ago I finally gave it a try.
The recipe that’s constantly first in the search results seemed so promising! Until I made it myself. That recipe called for:
1 cup of yogurt (without pieces of fruit) and ¾ cup of cornstarch
Let me tell you. It didn’t work. It was still basically yogurt with a slight thickness. I’d say I used about triple what the guide called for. Next time, I’ll try flipping the measurements.
After adding more and more cornstarch, I decided to watch the video. Well, the little girl who was adding the cornstarch in, I can tell you that there is no way that was a ¼ cup she was using. No way Jose.
My suggestion, start with 1 cup of yogurt, and 1 cup of cornstarch. You will certainly need more cornstarch than that but I found adding bit by bit was the trick.

Here’s the honest truth breakdown if I’m being real with y’all:
- 1c yogurt
- A ton of cornstarch

The consistency you’re looking for is that of slime that you buy in stores I’d say. When you pull it apart it should evenly and cleanly, and in a very satisfying way might I add… Make a very clean break.
After angrily flipping back to my phone I noticed comments on that post I was referring to. There weren’t any. My assumption is commenting is turned off because there wasn’t even an option to leave one. Probably because the recipe was crap.
So, another Pinterest fail turned into a Pinterest win by this mama.
What can I say, I’m here to give you honest opinions right? Now. While I’ll say the inspiration for this post was less than helpful, I won’t link to it because well.
That’s just mean.
What I love about it
Gotta add in that I love the fact that this playdough is safe to ingest. Because frankly, the best place to play with this is a high chair or table. And let’s be honest, toddlers shove everything in their mouths.
Just keep in mind, pinner beware! Oh and have lots of cornstarch at your disposal. Hehe.
It’s amazing how as an adult, this DIY homemade playdough is such a stress reliever! I may have played with it after the little man went to bed…
Aside from sensory play, you can pull out cookie cutters, cutlery, rolling pins, you name it! Use it as a learning tool by drawing letters, numbers or shapes and smoothing it back out to show them more.

My little man got a kick out of the feel of it alone and it was an activity that honestly took up nearly an hour. And as a mom.
My conclusion? Pinterest doesn’t always have winning posts, but inspiration is everything. At the end of the day, I had fun with Mr. P and I think he enjoyed it as well!
