9 of the Best ELF Products - Compiled by a Makeup Artist - Wine and Mommy Time

Let’s talk about makeup! One of my loves, the one love I owe my student loans to, the love that brought me to Vancouver, the easiest way to go from drab to fab. Makeup!

A little backstory on my love affair. It started when I saw Edward Scissorhands for the first time. I wanted to know who made Johnny Depp look like that and better yet, how. Ve Neill. Ever since, she has been my idol and was the reason why I went to makeup school. If you don’t know who she is, she is one of the main judges on the show Face Off!

9 Must-Try ELF Products - Compiled by a Makeup Artist - Wine and Mommy Time

Makeup can be expensive. Like really expensive. Especially when you buy into fads or trending brands.

I personally look at makeup as a whole and the practicality of the brand/product. When I fall in love with a brand, I stick with it. Or if I find a specific product from a brand I stick with that one item.

When I was in makeup school a few girls in my class were ordering products from a company called Eyes Lips Face. Or E.L.F. for short, (which is what they call themselves). I was shocked when they told me what they paid for the products, in a good way!

If you haven’t heard of E.L.F. go check them out, and no they are not paying me for this post, I have been using their products for years. They didn’t bribe me by sending me products or anything. This is just my honest opinion!

Some great features about E.L.F. as a company is that they are on the PETA cruelty free list, which means no animal testing! How or why companies think it’s okay to still do this today is just inexcusable, and I will not use products from a company that does. No I am not vegan or vegetarian, however, no bunny, rat or other helpless animal should suffer for my beauty products.

They have everything from brushes, to skincare, to makeup, to various makeup tools and more! I have a bunch of their brushes and a lot of their makeup. To keep it simple I’ll limit this post to some of my favorite makeup from them that I use on a daily basis.

Okay, onto my faves! Bring on the makeup!!

High Definition Powder $6

If you use liquid foundation and you’re not using a setting powder, you’re doing it wrong. Period. For a long time I was using Makeup Forever’s HD Microfinish Powder and was so in love, however, since the container was so tiny, in comparison to how much I use it, I went through it fast.

This HD powder is an exact duplicate to the Makeup Forever one and is more than $30 in savings. There is no smell, it is feather light and is so soft to the touch. It comes in sheer (translucent), shimmer and color corrective yellow (like banana powders which are very popular). I personally use the translucent powder.

I love that it sets my makeup without altering the color of the makeup underneath, some setting powders allow your foundation to continue oxidizing which makes your makeup change through the day. No thanks!

Flawless Finish Foundation $6

I would compare this foundation to Makeup Forever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation.

The coverage is medium, but buildable if you need more. The finish is a semi-matte, so you do still get some natural radiance.

I really love how lightweight it is, even when you layer, and even with having SPF 15, it’s surprising that you can barely feel it on your skin. It keep’s it’s coverage all day and gives you a truly flawless finish. It is also oil-free, which always helps!

Pro Tip* great foundation to use if you have eyelash extensions! It comes in 6 shades, I am currently using porcelain.

Acne Fighting Foundation $6

This is by far my favorite coverage. It is a medium-full coverage foundation, which I prefer because I like a full cover but without feeling cakey.

I am acne-prone, so I love that it includes salicylic acid, witch hazel, tea tree and aloe as some as it’s acne fighting ingredients. If you have a breakout, or want to prevent one, especially during or around that time of the month, this is the foundation for you.

Just like the Flawless Finish Foundation, it lasts all day and well into the night. I can usually get away with not using concealer with this foundation, awesome for lazy days!

Out of the 5 shades they have, I am currently using porcelain, in the summer I use buff.

Mineral Infused Face Primer $6

If you haven’t used a primer, or are unsure if it’s purpose, it’s all in the word. Primer. Would you paint a wall without primer? I hope not. Basically it works to create a perfect canvas for your makeup to go on top of, can help smooth fine lines and even out skin texture. This means that when you put your foundation on, you can use less. Why? Because it goes on more smoothly, thus, saving product, thus, saving money people!

It keeps my makeup in place, feels wonderful, doesn’t get greasy from morning, well into the night.

This primer comes in 4 colors, 3 of which are corrective colors, I however use clear. It prevents my makeup from oxidizing and changing color through the day and is so light that I honestly can’t feel it on.

Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer $2

Does your eyeshadow crease? Probably because you don’t use primer. Even if you’re not going to use foundation primer, please please please use eye primer if you’re going to wear eye makeup. Why go through the work for it to get ruined. Your eyes blink right? Therefore move right? So one would assume if you don’t do something to keep your lids matte and oil-free your makeup will crease. You should use a primer. Just do it okay.

For many years I used Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. It literally stuck with me through years of cheerleading competitions, parties, dances, workdays, everything. When I saw that E.L.F. made an eye primer I thought, “why not its $2”.

I can honestly say, it’s 100% comparable in the longevity department as UD’s Primer Potion. This is for sure, one of my favorite finds and I absolutely love how it feels going on. It’s so lightweight, not sticky, and it doesn’t discolor my eyeshadow.

Just add it to your cart, its $2!

Beautifully Bare Blush $4

I really like using cream blushes. I was using one from Paul and Joe before but I have a hard time always finding them so I was happy to see that E.L.F. has some!

The Beautifully Bare Blush is a newer product of theirs that I’m glad they came out with because they discontinued the blush/contour set I used to use!

Cream blush means you can layer for more color depth, or be light handed and have a more natural look. If you don’t know how to use it, it’s as simple as this order: makeup primer, foundation/concealer as needed, cream blush, setting powder. Easy right?

You can apply with your fingers or with a brush. I normally don’t recommend using your fingers, however, I do use my fingers for cream blush, it’s my only exception.

They currently only have two shades of this particular product, I use Rose Royalty.

Eyebrow Kit $3

Another product I’ve been using for years. The kit includes a small brush (I use my own because this one is far too tiny), cream color (step 1) and then colored setting powder (step 2). In routine order, with cream blush, I also put this on before using my HD Powder and then put the step 2 on top afterward.

I suggest going a color lighter than you think you are, to be safe. I use medium and it’s too dark for my brows, however, my hair is much darker than my brows, so I match my hair. No my hair isn’t colored, my brows just hate me.

My craptastic brows are very sparse from years of waxing when I was younger, so I have a lot to fill in and this kit really does the trick for me.

Makeup Mist & Set $3

Lets pull our look all together. Setting spray is something I consider non-negotiable to finish off my makeup. Some people don’t agree, but ultimately it’s up to you.

This spray comes out in a very refreshing fine mist and contains aloe, green tea, cucumber and vitamins a, c and e! This should be the last step in your routine (makeup-wise). Just give yourself a few spritzes and you’re all set! Pun intended.

If you are finding your makeup a little too matte, this can help you out.

Now, keep in mind, I haven’t gotten into mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, brushes and other products but I can’t give away the whole cow all at once right?

All in, this routine costs $36 USD. For all of it. That’s putting two different foundations in your arsenal. So if you only need one, that’s $30. Damn. They offer free shipping on orders over $25, so there’s your free shipping right there. Don’t even get me started with their ever changing gift with purchases which are always full size products.

Usually when I order online I never wait longer than a week and a half. However, now in Canada you can find some, not all, of their products in Walmart, Old Navy and a few other places. They are really easy to find in the United States though.

If you do order from their site and something comes in and is either not a match to what you thought the color would be, is broken, you don’t like it, whatever, just contact their customer service. They’re really fast to get back to you and are very nice to deal with. Their typical standard is one or all of these options, send you a new product while you keep your current product, offer a credit or offer a refund. So you can’t go wrong.

Okay, enough gushing, you get it by now. I love me some E.L.F. so sue me.

If you’re on a budget, or just wanting to check out some new makeup, I truly suggest you check them out. Again, I’m not paid for my opinion, wasn’t asked to give one, and they aren’t giving me anything for it. However, I really wouldn’t mind free swag haha!

Have you tried them? Please let me know what your favorite products are!
